COM 561 Graphic Design -1

The graphic design I am posting is formulated from an occupation aspiration which is to project manage lifestyle transition in a varied market at the lowest possible cost. The transitions for which I am referring are varied.

Senior citizens make retirement decisions regarding their living situations that may include aging in place, downsizing their existing home or relocating into an alternative setting.  If they choose to age in place, our services would include preparing their home for safe living.  This might consist of placing grab bars, installing non-slip flooring and relocating electrical outlets for safer access.  The services would be established after interviewing the client and providing a draft plan that has been vetted to assure the safest environment possible.

If the choice is to relocate or downsize, this customer base would likely extend broader than the senior citizen age group. In this situation, our services would assist in packing and moving or, disposing of items that are no longer wanted and readying the property.  In readying the property, we may assist in improving curb appeal and interior interest or even assist in organizing daunting areas such as a neglected garage area or space in the house where attention has been prioritized to other locations.

The name of the company was inspired by a client who called me an angel and so I wanted the primary background to reflect one that looked like angel wings. I looked for an image of a house that looked traditional and inviting while locating other images that would reflect the type of services we would provide.

As a first draft, my goal was to establish a product that could be evaluated to critique the images with an eye toward determining if they could tell a story on their own with little text. I would like to use this design for a website introduction as well as potential business cards.

After creating a new image file, sized at 800X600 pixels, I embedded the Rays Sun Light image (n.d.) as a full background to depict my wings.  I found a picture of a house that I thought was traditional and inviting (Anon).  I used the lasso tool to remove all of the background around the house and then centered it so that it would appear surrounded by the wings.  I proceeded to select a few more images to reflect the type of services we would offer.  I am still working on a couple more to better display our interior services.  The first image was one of boxes (London) to depict the relocation component and the overloaded shelf  (n.d.) helps to illustrate the need for organization.  I used the lasso tool again on the boxes to limit the image to just the boxes and I used the elliptical tool on the shelf to help blend it into the space a little better.

Moving to the text, I selected the text tool and after writing the “Working Wings”, I used the arch option to try to keep them in the shape of the wings.  I like the continuation of the lines.  I’d like to locate a couple more images and try to blur them into the background.  I appreciate any feedback and suggestions to this work in progress!.

My name is Sylvia Zellmer. Having been married for 35 years to a Veteran, I had the great opportunity of being a military wife and living in several different places. We fell in love with Puyallup WA so settled here 30 years ago with our son and daughter. We now have six kid’s kids and spend most of our time enjoying them! My 26 years in leadership roles in the healthcare industry provided me experience in leadership positions as well as the opportunity to work with staff and executives at all levels. My experience also included the implementation of computer systems across multiple hospitals, regulatory navigation, leading numerous teams, enhancing process efficiency through LEAN methodologies and lastly as a Program Director leading enterprise level projects. Empowered with the formal education and experience I’ve enjoyed, I’ve decided to draw on my most valued real-life experience as wife, mom and daughter for the next leg of my journey. With the privilege of participating in life-changing events of family members and special friends, some of the most challenging and emotional have been those where decisions were required around lack of savings, the need to downsize or make major changes to living situations. Faced with monetary, emotional and physical challenges, our help provided the fuel they needed. This will become my next journey. I will be available to help the elderly age in place if that is their desire, help people relocate if necessary and we will do that by assisting with cleaning, construction, downsizing possessions and creating relationships with realtors if required. I will act as their Project Director if you will and will do it for the lowest possible rate This Blog will be used to recruit customers as well as to share the stories of their journey all of which we’ll hope for happy endings!

  1. Sylvia,

After reading your story and mission, I think this would be a fantastic business opportunity. I personally have known many elderly people that would prefer to stay in their homes rather than move to a new place that has the required support they need. By providing a service that matches their own homes with new possible properties, I’m sure most would elect to stay where they are. My two recommendations would be to add generic angel wings behind the “Working Wings: Lifestyle Transition quote”, I feel this would symbolize the words and flow nicely with the message that you’re trying to convey. It also appears the background image with the tree’s and light shining through has the ocean involved? I’m not sure if this further resembles an ambiance you’re shooting for or you were unable to crop that out. I think you have all the components to a strong design with most of what you’re trying to communicate symbolized by images. This is a very cool idea and I feel you’re very close to nailing your design!

  2. What a noble profession! I love that you gave the impression of angel influence thru the light shining down! I also like the proximity use in your images to group them. In terms of ideas to improve: A) The law of 3rds may apply well to help balance the picture. What happens if the house is placed not in center, but on the lower right quadrant? To balance taglines top left, image lower right. And headline centered on the page? B) Do you have meaning behind the forest in the back and how does it contribute to your message – I wonder if it is necessary in that regard to reflect visual and intellectual unity. The forest also adds darkness (I feel like I’m in an old basement in the photo) which may or may not be your intent? C) The images selected reflect “before”, is there a way to draw the viewer to see the after, the impact of your work? Consider hierarchy visual implementation, continuation oriented, to tell the story? Some sort of gradient – left to right, starting dark (mess, overwhelmed, sad), moving to the light (organized, clean, happy). Well done and best of luck!
